International projects - EQUISAFE

EquiSafe is a project funded by the European Commission under the Research for the Benefit of SMEs Framework Programme 7 (FP7) theme. The EquiSafe project aims to develop an electronic system that increases safety in horse riding and equestrian activities. The novel system will be developed for monitoring risks related to equine activities, equine health and behaviour. The system is intended to be used both by expert and non-experts.

The EquiSafe system will consist of the following features:

Equine monitoring:

  • Real-time location tracking of horses both inside and outside the range
  • On-line health monitoring with automatic alarms
  • Horse movement and behaviour recognition using wearable inertial data and images
  • Automatic detection of abnormal and undesirable behaviour in the stable, and when being handled and ridden.
  • A Knowledge-based Expert System running in software on the local computer will be constantly collecting and analysing this information and will raise an alarm when it detects an abnormal behaviour.

Rider monitoring:

  • Fall detection sensors will raise an alarm to nearby instructor and headquarters
  • Rider may raise an alarm when feeling in distress
  • Accompanying instructor will be able to monitor his/her team. System will automatically inform instructor if a horse separates from the group or if horse becomes nervous.

Project Start Date: November 2013
Project Duration: 24 Months
